29. Cuban Property Claims – when Fidel Castro expropriated private businesses and real estate for the state, the prior owners were never compensated.
In fact, many people were killed or forced to flee the island.
There is hope that if the embargo against Cuba goes away and relations are normalized (or if there is regime change), Cuba will finally settle its debts either with money or by providing claimants with some other asset that could generate cash flow in the future.
Additionally, claimants can now sue foreign or American companies that benefit from the stolen property for trafficking. Some of these companies are starting to settle these claims monetarily.
